Aloha, and welcome to my photo gallery! My name is Capt. Mark Coulbourne. I work as a boat captain/photographer for Assateague Explorer in Virginia and a photographer in Hawaii for Hawaii Pictures Company. I also work as a photographer in other parts of the world and post my photos here. I enjoy photographing places such as Alaska, Indonesia, Japan, the Hawaiian Islands, British Columbia and elsewhere. I strive to offer beautiful pictures of Hawaii and other areas worldwide such as Chincoteague, Virginia (where I grew up and I travel to frequently each year). The galleries here are sort of a glimpse into my life and the areas I travel to.

Although I have lived in Hawaii since 1990, I am originally from Chincoteague, Virginia. I grew up with the wild horses there. Some images I specialize in include: Horse Photos - Equine photography of Chincoteague Ponies in Virginia. I spend more time than anyone photographing these wild ponies by boat about 5 months per year, 7 days a week in the remote areas they live in along the barrier island in Virginia. My photos have been published in several magazines.

I was recently featured on the “Good Morning America Show” telling the world how I take visitors on these photo safaris to see the legendary wild horses along the waters edge in Virginia. These areas are where the ponies have lived along the 37 mile island since the early 1600’s. My family has lived in the area also since the early 1600’s and has lived on Chincoteague Island since the early 1800’s. My parents were classmates back in the 1940’s with the “Beebe” kids that the popular children’s book “Misty” was written about.

I have been called "The Pony Whisperer". I basically grew up with the wild horses over at Assateague while going to the beach surfing and enjoying the abundance of nature there. While growing up as a child and surfing over at Assateague, I loved the wildlife and miles of pristine beaches. When it came to surfing at Assateague, I soon realized that something was missing most of the time - the waves. So I moved to the North Shore of Hawaii on Oahu in 1990 to pursue my surfing goals and live out my dreams. I still live in Hawaii, surf on the North Shore and other areas. I enjoy surfing, travel and photography. Way back in 2001 I began to return to my native home of Chincoteague during the Summer. I did this because I realized that many people who visited Assateague until then never had the chance to see many of the remote pristine areas along Assateague where I grew up venturing into by boat.

A boat is definitely the best way to see all the herds of wild ponies along the island where I photograph in Virginia. You are welcome to join us on the daily boat tours that I lead as captain and photographer May - Oct. You can stay in the town of Chincoteague and that is where the boat cruises depart from. This is a great photographic opportunity of anyone! I am out there all day, so of course I get the best chance to see the wild ponies. Since I am from Chincoteague, I grew up searching a vast array of places along the islands via boat while working as a waterman and avid outdoorsman there. I have an extensive local knowledge of all the waterways. The areas that I take visitors to are where the wild ponies on Assateague (located near Chincoteague Island) frequent the most. These extensive areas are where the wild horses (ponies) feed on the marshes and enjoy many remote back bay beaches.

I still surf the awesome, perfect, massive waves on the North Shore and other areas of Hawaii and work there most of the year. In Hawaii, I have worked as a park ranger, boat captain taking scuba divers and as a photographer there for many years. Besides working as a boat captain and kayak guide back in Virginia to take visitors to see the wild horses, I also work as a nature photographer. You can enjoy photography with me while on the boat tours during the Spring, Summer and Fall. I return each Summer season to Chincoteague in order to take people like you to see the most beautiful areas along Assateague where I grew up. I capture some of the best photos possible of the wild ponies on a daily basis via the Assateague Explorer tours May - Oct., then I return home to Hawaii to capture photos there and abroad.
